Free study classes at Temple Sinai, Brookline in late October and November, 2009 Shabbat Morning Torah Study, October 24 and November 14, 9 am:

Twice each month on Saturday mornings, Temple Sinai members and friends meet in Rabbi Andy Vogel’s office at Temple Sinai to study and discuss ideas presented by the week’s Torah portion.  The next meeting of the Rabbi’s Study group will take place on October 24 at 9:00 am.  We begin with a light breakfast and a bit of singing, and then study the text in English.  You do not need any prior study of the Torah or Hebrew knowledge to attend.  All are welcome for this friendly exchange of Jewish ideas.  The next meeting will be held on November 14 at 9:00 am.  Come try it out!  Questions?  Call 617.277.5888.
 
Free 3-part lecture series “The Impact of Jews on Contemporary American Literature” at Temple Sinai October 25, November 1 and November 8, 9:30 am:

On Sunday, October 25, at 9:30 am, Dr. Larry Lowenthal will begin a three-part series of lectures entitled, “The Impact of Jews on Contemporary Literature.”  Participants will be introduced to the work of novelists – Philip Roth, Bernard Malamud, and Saul Bellow; poets – Allen Ginsberg, Karl Shapiro and Muriel Rukeyser; and dramatists – Clifford Odets, Arthur Miller, David Mamet and Tony Kushner.  The focus of the lectures will be on the “Jewishness” of these disparate writers in terms of style, content and theme.  The lectures take place at Temple Sinai in Brookline and continue on November 1 and November 8 at 9:30 am.  Dr. Lowenthal served as the Executive Director of the Boston Chapter of the American Jewish Committee for 17 years.  Please call our office at 617.277.5888 with questions.
