Temple Sinai’s Jewish-Muslim Dialogue Project
Temple Sinai and the Islamic Society of Boston Share Visits
Over 30 members of Temple Sinai visited the new Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center in Roxbury, MA, on Sunday, January 25, 2009 as guests of the Muslim American Society of Boston. The visit was a result of planning by a sub-committee of members of Temple Sinai’s Social Action Committee and representatives of the Islamic Society. A stimulating and informative afternoon, it began with a tour of the new mosque and an opportunity to view the afternoon prayer session. Following this we met with members of the Society to hear presentations from both groups followed by a lively question and answer period. There was general agreement that this was only the beginning of a neighborly relationship. A clear desire was expressed by all participants to hold more exchanges in the near future. Sinai members were treated to an elegant Kosher buffet which provided an opportunity to mingle and meet as well as talk with members of the Muslim society on an individual basis.
On Sunday afternoon, May 17, 2009, many Temple Sinai members hosted our neighbors from the Muslim Society of Boston at an informative afternoon of education and exchange as the second opportunity to continue the development of an ongoing relationship with the Muslim community. Following words of welcome, Rabbi Andrew Vogel began the meeting with a brief explanation of the history of Temple Sinai’s building followed by a description of the religious artifacts. Guests and congregants joined the Rabbi on the Bimah where the Torah was unscrolled. The Rabbi read from the Torah and explained the reading portion. Following the meeting in the sanctuary, the afternoon continued in the social hall where round table discussions took place focused on the religious, social and cultural issues common to both Muslim and Jewish practices i.e. holidays, education, practices related to prayer, death, dress, etc.
There was general agreement that the discussions were lively and informative and the beginning of an ongoing exchange between the Muslim Society and Temple Sinai. Members of both groups agreed to participate in a planning group to discuss further programs. A very festive buffet concluded the afternoon.
