| Passover Music Festival
For almost 60 years, the Passover Music Festival has been an integral part of Temple Sinai's music program. The festival always features an exciting program focusing on one of the many forms of Jewish music. This year, because of scheduling requirements, the festival is taking place on
Friday, June 12, 2009 (20 Sivan, 5769)
at 7:30 PM
as part of Shabbat services.
As always, the festival is free and open to the public.
This year's program features The Shabbat of Salamone Rossi Hebreo , with an 8-member choir directed by Cantor Louise Treitman and Dr. Richard Lustig. It also includes Boston-area cantors and singers. The service will be lead by Cantor Rosalie Toubes.
Salamone Rossi (c.1570-c.1630) was a musician who spent most of his life working for the court of the Gonzaga dukes in Mantua, Italy. He was the first known composer of Jewish choral music, setting liturgical passages, psalms, and religious poetry to anywhere from 3 to 8 voices. Rossi's music will be heard as it was originally intended - not as concert pieces but as prayers and songs of praise to God. In the Hebrew calendar, the 20th of Sivan corresponds to Friday, June 7, 1624, so we will be recreating an event that happened on a Shabbat evening nearly four centuries ago.
The Passover Music Festival relies on contributions from members and friends. Please download a copy of our letter providing more information. It includes a form that you can use to support this beautiful and meaningful program. See below for a history of the Passover Music Festival.
